Dr. Dany Laveault is Professor Emeritus of Measurement and Evaluation in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. He served as Associate Dean of Research from 1998 to 2002 and was awarded the Research Excellence Award in 2012. From 1993 to 2001, he served as the Director of the international French-language journal Mesure et évaluation en éducation. In 1995, the Association for the Development of Evaluation Methodologies in Education (ADME) honoured him with its annual prize for his significant contributions to the field. He holds B.A., M.Ps, and Ph.D. degrees in Psychology from Laval University.

Dany has authored and co-authored numerous books and scientific articles on topics including learning evaluation, professional judgment in assessment, and student self-evaluation. He is particularly proud of the success of his publications, especially two books: Introduction aux théories des tests en psychologie et en sciences de l’education, 4e edition (2023), and Assessment for Learning: Meeting the Challenge of Implementation (2017). He also takes pride in his contribution to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Review of Evaluation and Assessment in Education: New Zealand.

Dr. Laveault has served as an evaluation consultant for numerous educational jurisdictions and organizations in Canada and abroad, including Ontario, Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, and New Zealand. In Ontario, he served as a member of the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO) Measurement Advisory Panel and Psychometric Expert Panel from 2004 to 2018. From 2024 to 2025, he conducted a program evaluation of the Language Learning Centre (Centre d’apprentissage des langues) at Laurentian University. Professor Laveault has been an advisor to the Quebec Ministry of Education for many years. For instance, from 2022 to 2024, he coached test-development teams at la Direction de l’évaluation des apprentissages in developing domain test specifications booklets (cahier de spécification de domaine) for approximately 25 provincial tests. Since 2023, he has been reviewing the statistical moderation procedures used in Quebec by Sanction des études for secondary school certification.

Dr. Laveault believes that large-scale assessment can contribute to monitoring education systems while also having the potential to provide helpful feedback to students and educators. “When properly articulated across different levels, large-scale assessment can ultimately help students and their teachers set realistic learning goals and better co-regulate teaching and learning.” Furthermore, he believes that the artificial boundary between summative and formative assessment is increasingly fading as a result of recent advances in test theory and artificial intelligence (AI).
